Safe Security

Material

Whether it’s the double-steel composite doors, chromed locking bolts, or a tungsten carbide drill protection plate, you can pretty much bank on any reputable safe company providing a highly secure product with the highest quality materials. To find out more about individual companies you can browse the section on safe manufacturers.

Thickness

Gauges and inches are used to measure the thickness and dimensions of the different specs. Gauges are used to measure the steel sheet, or other drill resistant plates, incased within the walls of the safe. 10 gauge equals 9/64 inch and 12 gauge equals 7/64 inch, making the lower the gauge the greater the thickness, maxing out at 1/2 inch. 10 gauge and 12 gauge are two of the more popular measurements for the body thickness. The walls and the doors can measure anywhere from less than 1 inch to over 4 inches, and the protection plate lining the inside of the door is usually made of the same material and gauge as the body, often with extra protection in the more vital areas such as the lock.

If you're in a flood prone area then it may be in your best interest to look into getting a waterproof safe.

Locks

Many gun safes give you the option to choose between a combination lock, an electronic lock, and sometimes even a fingerprint lock. Follow this link to find out more about the features and benefits of these different types of locks.

Mounting Hardware

Many gun safes come with predrilled holes and mounting hardware so that you can bolt it to the floor. Even an impenetrable safe is no good if it itself can be stolen.
